... any new water supply scheme must be sustainable from an environmental, social and economical perspective

What is the significance of this situation in a national context?

Ireland has a high level of regional interdependence. The Dublin Region is the largest socio-economic driver of the country, with Dublin City being the commercial capital of Ireland. The aims of the National Spatial Strategy and National Development Plan cannot be realised without the necessary water to support planned economic growth in the Dublin Region. Find out more about The National Spatial Strategy.

Despite the need for this water supply, it is fully recognised that the Dublin Region can only avail of sustainably available water supply quantities, which are not required for local catchment use. This means that any new water supply scheme must be sustainable from an environmental, social and economical perspective. Find out more about the Options under consideration.

Technical, environmental and economic studies (including extensive stakeholder consultations) have been underway since 2004 in relation to the development of a potential new water supply source for the Dublin Region (Water Supply Area). In total, 10 potential new water supply options were evaluated. A clear recommended option has now emerged from the detailed studies and consultations. For information on this option click here.
